Why Google Ads for lawyers plays by different rules
People look for a lawyer under stress: after a car accident, a dismissal, a dispute with a business partner. They type a query, see a few ads and call whoever earns their trust first. That is why search advertising for legal services generates inquiries from literally the first day, but it is also expensive: cost per click in this niche is among the highest of any industry.
The second difference is competition. A local law firm on Google competes not only with other firms in town but with national brands and aggregators with enormous budgets. Outbidding them is usually impossible, so precision wins: narrow campaigns for a person's specific situation, the right geography and audiences the big players overlook.
The third difference is urgency, which varies by service. Someone who needs a tow truck right now searches differently from someone who is thinking about compensation a week later. Practice areas differ in audience, click cost and client value, so a single generic campaign blends everything together and hides what actually pays off.
Finally, there is lead quality. A lawyer needs inquiries that can be worked with, not just phone calls. Unqualified leads eat up time the firm could spend on clients.
Our approach, step by step
- Audit and economics. We review previous campaigns if there were any, the competition and the firm's economics: how much it can pay for an inquiry in each practice area.
- Keyword research. We build a full query base for every service, a separate set of competitor keywords people use to find large providers, and a starting list of negative keywords.
- Campaign structure. A separate campaign for each service, a separate one for competitor queries, remarketing for visitors who did not get in touch and, where relevant, language audience tests.
- Geography. A primary city plus additional ones, so the budget can be shifted based on results rather than spent on areas the firm does not serve.
- Conversions. We set up tracking of calls, forms and chats in GA4 and Google Ads and enable enhanced conversions, so the algorithm optimizes for inquiries, not clicks.
- Ads and landing pages. Copy and assets for each situation, plus recommendations for practice area landing pages.
- Optimization. Every week we clean up search terms and adjust bids and budgets across campaigns, and every month we report cost per inquiry for each practice area.
Typical problems we find
- One campaign for all services. There is no way to tell which practice area brings clients and which only burns budget.
- Broad keywords without negatives. Ads are shown to students, job seekers and people looking for free document templates.
- Any click counts as a conversion, such as a tap on the phone number or opening a form, so the algorithm optimizes for the wrong thing.
- Geo wider than the jurisdiction: money goes to people the firm cannot help.
- One landing page for everything, so a person with a specific problem does not see an answer to their situation.
What a launch looks like in our practice
For a service that helps people after a car accident by bringing legal support, towing, body repair and medical treatment together in one place, we launched Google Ads from scratch, with no data history and no proven keywords. We collected 13,598 keywords across four service lines and a separate set of 457 competitor keywords people use to find large providers.
The account structure has 9 campaigns: four for individual services, one for competitor queries, remarketing and three language audience tests. Geo covers 5 cities, one primary and four more, so the budget can be allocated according to results. Instead of competing with national players on budget, we bet on precision: narrow campaigns for a person's specific situation, local focus and language audiences that large competitors effectively do not reach.
The project launched recently, and we are not publishing numerical results yet. But this structure shows from day one which service, city and language audience brings inquiries, and it gives a basis for scaling on data rather than assumptions.
For an employment law firm, we built lead generation in Meta Ads in parallel, with separate campaigns for five practice areas and a target cost per lead of 10-15 USD. We apply the same principle of splitting by practice area in Google Ads.
Timelines and deliverables
Keyword research, conversion setup and launch take the first few weeks. The first inquiries arrive right after launch, while a stable cost per lead takes shape after several weeks of optimization, once each campaign has gathered data. You get a campaign structure built around your practice areas, configured analytics, weekly optimization and a monthly report with spend, number and cost of inquiries, and recommendations for the next period.
Who it is for
- law firms with several practice areas;
- services that help people after accidents, injuries and insurance cases;
- firms competing with large national players in a single city or region;
- companies that serve a multilingual audience.
